He explained the importance of technical education for the development of youths and called on the management of the higher institutions to cooperate with the governing councils to achieve set goals of improving the institutions for the better.

According to him, “education is not only about just teaching and doing exams; there is the need for skills acquisition which will give our children an added advantage in succeeding in life; I am charging the councils to introduce technical education which will ensure that our children acquire entrepreneurial skills even outside the area of their studies, because it is important that our children are well equipped when they leave the environment of learning.

“I am glad that some of our institutions have started taking technical education very seriously and it is my hope that the current councils will be able to upscale this mandate by working with the management of our higher institutions to ensure that we have proper teaching and thereafter it is important that every student passing through our higher institutions be able to leave the higher institution with a skill set as it is actually very helpful in the current day Nigeria because we can no longer rely on paper qualifications; there is a lot of unemployment currently in this nation but those who are able to use their hands will definitely succeed.”

Governor Okowa charged the councils to cooperate with the management of the higher institutions in ensuring that institutions develop better than its current state.

“The men and women that make up these governing councils are people of integrity with years of experience, so bring to the fore your expertise which will ensure that our institutions are improved, our lecturers are disciplined and honourable and the students are taught well,” he added

Responding on behalf of the councils and their members Dr. Festus Okubor thanked Governor Okowa for giving them the opportunity to serve. He assured that they would deliver on the mandate of Governor Okowa’s agenda of creating an educational sector that will stand the test of time.
