Report outbreak of armyworm, Commissioner warns farmers

Commissioner for Agriculture, Gombe State, Alhaji Abba Buba-Biri, has advised farmers to pay attention and report any attack of their crops by armyworm and any other pests on their farms.

He gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Saturday.

He said that the only solution to the problem was by reporting on time to the appropriate quarters to enable them take measures against them.

Buba-Biri said during the 2017 farming season, armyworm damaged crops as a result of not reporting on time.

“Previously we have experienced a lot of damage by armyworm, which was as a result of ignorance.

“I want to advise our farmers that as soon as they notice any change on their crops they should not hesitate to reports to the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We have the Agricultural Development Programme technical officers who are on ground to attend to any complaint of this nature,” he said.

The commissioner further said government had procured 40, 000 tons of improved maize seed for the season which would be distributed to farmers.

According to him, the seed was already being distributed across the 11 local government areas of the state.

“We have procured 40, 000 tonnes of improve maize seed for our farmers, because we want them to have bumper harvest,” he said. (NAN)
