Members of the House of Representatives have rejected a Bill which sought for a single term of six years for elected officials.
The Bill seeking for an Act to alter the country’s constitution to provide for a single term of six years for the President, governors and members of the National Assembly and States Houses of Assembly failed to pass second reading on Tuesday.
The bill was sponsored by John Dyegh from Benue State, who argued that the cost of re-election for the president and governors was too exorbitant.
He also argued that the bill will help to curb the electoral violence and irregularities which usually characterised the re-election bid of the politicians.

Dyegh further argued that the bill was also necessary for members of the National Assembly to gain more experience in six years instead of four.
Majority of the lawmakers however disagreed with Dyegh.
They leaned more towards credible electoral processes. They argued that the president or a governor will not be able to make meaningful achievements if restricted to just a single term of six year.
Furthermore, they said that there was provision for appraisal of political leaders every four years in the current two-term tenure.
