N30, 000 minimum wage: Buhari, governors maintain sealed lips after meeting

The meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the governors under the auspices of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum ended on Monday with both parties reluctant to talk on the outcome of the meeting.

The meeting which held at the Presidential Villa had been convened to resolve the issue of the proposed N30,000 National Minimum Wage.

While labour is insisting on N30, 000, the governors are standing on either paying N22, 500 or downsizing their workforces to meet labour’s demand. They had also suggested the review of the federal allocation to the states to enable them pay.

Throughout the negotiations, the governors have insisted on inability to pay N30, 000.

Governors present at Monday’s meeting were Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State; Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos state led by the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State.

From the government side was the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, was also at the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, contrary to the normal practice, Gov. Yari refused to address State House Correspondents.
