The hosts, Man. City dominated the early stages of the game and forced David de Gea into saving three good attempts from Sergio Aguero and Riyad Mahrez in the opening 15 minutes.
Manchester United took the lead against the run of play when Matic reacted first to Fred’s free kick and connected with a half-volley that beat Claudio Bravo at the near post.
Raheem Sterling saw his goal ruled out for offside just before half time. City appeared nervous after the break but Sterling again missed a golden chance from a counter attack in the 59 minutes when he went past De Gea but blasted the ball over the bar.

David Silva had a great opportunity to equalise but instead of shooting de
cided to pass the ball to Ilkay Gundogan who failed to get his shot into the net.
Matic was sent off with 15 minutes remaining and although Aguero had another goal ruled out for offside, City won the tie despite losing on the night.
In the first leg encounter at Old Traford, Man. City defeated Man. United 3 – 1 and in the second leg at the Etihad stadium, city lost by a lone goal. Despite losing, Manchester City progressed to the finals.
