Desirous to enhance the safety of residents of the state, Imo State government has inaugurated a task force on public safety to further strengthen the operations of its public safety unit.

The Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodinma on Public Safety, Prince Ugochukwu Nzekwe, while inaugurating the body in his office, charged them to apply utmost decency, responsibility, decorum and civility in the discharge of their duties.

Nzekwe, a two-time member of the State House of Assembly (Nkwerre constituency), warned that the government would not hesitate to disband them should they indulge in excesses capable of bringing the government to disrepute.

He assured that government would continue to accord prominence and premium to the security and safety of all residents in the state, noting that previous disasters in the state occurred because of the poverty of visions of past administrations to strike while the iron was hot.

Nzekwe recalled his earlier visits to all security agencies in the state, which he said, was meant to solicit their cooperation and partnership with his office and enjoined the task force to always contact them whenever the need arises to smoothen their operations.

He called for unity, cohesion, oneness and sincerity of purpose among the members, adding that they should not be deterred or dismayed by any uncomplimentary remarks from members of the public.

“Public safety is of paramount concern to the state government and you are expected to set standards in this regard by controlling disaster and people who either wittingly or unwittingly indulge in sinister acts.

“Apply human face in the performance of your duties and do not intimidate, coerce or harass anybody because we want to sanitise the system. You may have heard of the last tragedies that occurred in Irette and Nekede and we do not want such thing again.”

Other members of the task force are Atuogu Dennis C. (Vice chairman), Liberty Eboh (secretary), Emma Chibuzor Amaechi (Head of Operations), Nnanyereugo Prosper Ihejirika and Chigozie Enyinnaya.
