IHRC Reports Cases Of Violence In Kogi Poll

The team of International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), Geneva (Nigeria Committee) on Saturday reported cases of violence and attacks against members of the opposition in the Kogi governorship election.

Dr. Kenneth Anozie, IHRC Spokesman, told The NEXT EDITION: “From our field reports on Saturday morning, there have been cases of violence and attacks being unleashed on mostly members of the opposition.

“This portends only one thing, to frighten voters not to vote, or to intimidate the opposition. These are very frightening times, and these kind of attitude in a democracy is quite unacceptable.

“Peoples rights to exercise their franchise will not be tampered with by anybody. The International Human Rights Commission uses this medium to alert the security agencies, and INEC and the government in power to take all necessary steps to curb all the infractions that will jeopardise people’s will to expressed freely.

“We use this medium to condemn the attack on the residence of Senator Dino Melaye that happened about 7a.m (Saturday) as well as other skirmishes in the house of the opposition. The Kogi and Bayelsa election must be done in according with known laws of Nigeria.”
