The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has declared that he will not recontest for the post of the national chairman of the party.

The national convention of the party comes up on June 23 and interested members have been called upon to indicate interest by obtaining forms.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Odigie-Oyegun said he decided not to recontest in the interest of the party.

Besides, he said his decision not to recontest was a product of a wide consultation with his family, associates and other stakeholders.

His words: “Now that the Convention Committee has invited interested aspirants to obtain forms to contest various national positions in our party, it has become necessary for me to state my position.

“I have consulted widely with my family, friends and associates, even though, I had the desire to re-contest as the national chairman of the party.

“I have decided that it is ultimately in the best interest of the party for me to withdraw from the race.

“I believe that the party faces difficult days ahead, and all critical stakeholders in its leadership would be required to bind together for a common purpose.”

He said even though he would not be contesting, he would continue to put in his best as the current national chairman of the party until a new leader is elected.

Odigie-Oyegun spoke on the cancellation of the tenure elongation for his executive.

According to him, but for the opposition of President Muhammadu Buhari to the tenure elongation, his executive would have still continued for the period of the extension.

He said the extension would have ensured the stabilisation of the party and prevented a divided house.

He said the different problems faced during the various congresses held recently by the party would have been avoided.
