The Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, on Wednesday paraded six suspects for the alleged rape and killing a 100-Level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, Uwaila Vera Omozuwa, in Benin city, the Edo State capital.

Recall that the late Uwaila was beaten and raped inside a hall in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City on May 13, where she had gone to study.

She later died on May 31, 18 days after, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

She was aged 23 years.

The CP gave the names of the suspects as Nelson Ogbebor, Akato Valentine, Tina Samuel, Mary Ade, Nosa Osabohien and Collins Ulegbe.

Speaking while parading the suspects, the CP said, “The matter is of great concern to the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, who sent homicide experts to work with our policemen in Benin.

“What we are seeing today is a result of the efforts of the police to get at the root of the crime, and today, I announce to you that the perpetrators have been arrested.”

Kokumo said the post-mortem confirmed that the deceased was raped.

He noted that the parade of the suspects had made good the promise to the people of the state that the police would do all in their powers to unmask those behind Uwaila’s death.

“I assured the good people of Edo State that we will leave no stone unturned to unravel the mystery behind this,” he said.

The police boss confirmed that the suspects have made ‘confessional statements’.
