The UN has restated its continued support, commitment, coordination and response to humanitarian and other emergencies in Nigeria.
The UN Resident Coordinator, Edward Kallon, said this while speaking at the celebration of 73rd UN Day on Wednesday in Abuja.
He also pledged the commitment of UN to make a giant push to further advance and implement the humanitarian development and peace Nexus as a preventive measure in Nigeria.
“We are working closely with government, institutions and the humanitarian community to mobilise support, locally and internationally to respond to the social, economic, environmental and infrastructural impact of the crisis in the Northeast and other parts of Nigeria.
“We will make a giant push to further advance and implement the humanitarian development and peace Nexus as a preventive measure in Nigeria. In this respect, we urge the authorities to vigorously pursue a political process in addition to other measures toward finding a sustainable solution to the crisis,” he said.

Kallon said that good political and economic governance in Nigeria was essential for the country, the sub-region, Africa and the world given its size and economic importance.
According to him, attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and democracy through free and fair elections are essential ingredients for lasting peace and stability in Nigeria.
He said that the world must pay attention and lend its support to ensure that Nigeria moves into the right development path.
The UN boss described the theme of the 2018 UN Day: “Strengthening Partnership, Accelerating Progress for Development and Growth “as significant saying that it reaffirmed UN’s commitment to supporting the government and the people of Nigeria to make real progress as UN consolidates its development initiatives and vision.
“For a more sustainable and resilience future for all Nigerians where no one is left behind we must built smarter partnerships.
“We must also harness the wealth of all actors-government, civil society, private sector, development partners and citizens towards achieving these ambitious goals.
“We call on government, civil society and development partners to devote their will, their skill and their resources to prioritize the achievement of the SDGs.
According to him, the UN will continue to work very closely with office of the Senior Special Assistant to the president on SDGs and other stakeholders to achieve the said goals.
