No fewer than five people were killed on Wednesday in Akure, Ondo State, when a petrol tanker fell, spilled its content and caught fire.

The incident happened at Shagari Village Junction on Akure-Owo Expressway.

In the fire incident, about seven vehicles were burnt, with some of the victims trapped in them.

Two houses and shops were also burnt.

The accident, it was gathered, occurred when the tanker which was on a high speed tried to avoid hitting a Toyota Corolla car which bumped into its lane.

The driver of the tanker was unsuccessful in the bid.

The tanker fell on the car and caught fire as its content spilled.

Sympathisers joined men of the Ondo State Fire Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) put out the fire and help affected persons.
