The Federal Government has said the strange disease killing people and causing panic in some communities in Benue state, is not Lassa fever.

Health Minister, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who made the clarification on Friday in Abuja explained that tests had been carried out to ascertain what the disease is and the result was negative to Lassa fever.

However, he said further investigations were still going on to ascertain what exactly the disease is.

Ehanire disclosed that it is however, suspected that the disease could be as a result of chemicals used by fishermen to kill fishes.

He said the consumption of the fishes might have triggered the series of deaths and so advised farmers against using chemicals to fish saying they are poisonous not only to the fishes, but also to anyone who consumes the fish.
