The police had laid siege to the home of the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district, on Friday, December 28, seeking to arrest him for the alleged shooting of a police officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, while on duty.

Rather than leave, the police on Sunday sent in reinforcements to man the mansion located at 11 Sangha Street, Maitama.

The Next Edition gathered that the fully-armed policemen, who were dropped off by several patrol vehicles, sealed off the major entry and exit points to the senator’s house.

Sen. Melaye is believed to be hiding in the building contrary to claims that he was in Lagos.

In a statement issued on Friday, the police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, had explained that Melaye was wanted to answer to the case of attempted culpable homicide in the shooting, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, while on duty in Kogi State on July 19, 2018.

He had also stressed that the police would not leave Melaye’s premises until he was arrested.

Some reports claim that the police had cut off water and electricity supply to Melayes home in the hope that he would be forced to come out.

In the course of the year, Melaye has been at daggers drawn with the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, the police and the All Progressives Congress.
