Olukoya Ogungbeje has withdrawn from the ongoing trial of his client, suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans.

The lawyer said he withdrew for personal reasons.

According to a statement he issued, the lawyer stated that there had been repeated threats to his life.

“I dare say we have no regrets whatsoever, having conducted the criminal charges involving our client this far.

“For the sake of history, we have been able to enrich the basic principles of our criminal jurisprudence, especially the principle premised on ‘an accused person being presumed innocent until the contrary is proved’ no matter the public opinion and criticism.”

The Lagos State government is prosecuting Evans over issues bordering on conspiracy, kidnapping and attempted murder.

The government has assured that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring justice.

Evans was arrested at his mansion in Magodo area of Lagos in 2017.
