Martin Onovo, the 2015 presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP), has called on Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resign immediately.
Onovo, a chieftain of the Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), who spoke through a statement in Lagos on Monday, said by the sudden postponement of the elections, the INEC chairman had demonstrated a high level of incompetence.
He said: “The official reasons published by INEC are weather and logistic problems. Both reasons are false and senseless. The weather is not controlled by INEC and so, INEC should have made adequate arrangements for adverse weather.
“The second reason of logistics amounts to a confession of incompetence. Both reasons are senseless and deceitful as INEC had earlier confirmed that the commission was ready for the elections.”
Onovo maintained that the postponement of the elections was a clear violation of the Electoral Act, hence Yakubu should resign.
He stressed further: “We know the real reason for the postponement is the interference by the lawless and unpatriotic presidency that is paranoid with fear of imminent defeat.

“The INEC Chairman is unable to conceal his partisanship and has been serially accused publicly of partisanship with damning evidence.
“The disruption and colossal cost of this unpatriotic and unlawful postponement is a catastrophic loss to the country.
“The disruption to the academic calendar of schools, the disruption to business, travel and wedding plans, a loss of public confidence in INEC and the electoral process and the damage to the image of the country are some of the costs of this unlawful and unpatriotic postponement.
“INEC Chairman accepting responsibility for this postponement is a failed attempt to cover up the interference of the presidency.
“Citing postponement of previous elections is inappropriate as the reasons then were cogent and verified. He must resign immediately.”
