A policeman on Saturday shot dead an election observer in Umuida community, Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze north local government area of Enugu state.
The spokesman of the Enugu police command, Ebere Amarizu, confirmed the incident to journalists, attributing the incident to “accidental discharge.”
The observer whose identity is still unknown was shot in the head by the police officer stationed close to the residence of Ayogu Eze, the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in the state.
He was first taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Enugu Ezike before he was transferred to another hospital in Enugu town where he eventually died.

It was gathered that the election observer got into a confrontation with the policeman at a polling unit close to Eze’s residence.
It was also gathered that APC supporters and agents at the said polling unit confronted journalists and observers.
Recall that Eze, who alleged that his name was not included in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s final list of candidates, boycotted Saturday’s governorship election along with his supporters.
