Benue State Police Command has dispelled the rumour making the rounds on social media that there was crisis between Tiv and Jukum communities in Wurukum, Makurdi.

State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass said there was no tribal clash in the state capital but an act of criminality by some hoodlums who wanted to create an unnecessary tension.

According to him, “the fact of the case is that on 16th February, 2022 at about 1500hrs, information was received that some fishermen had gone fishing in a pond behind Rice mill, Wurukum, Makurdi, without inviting other community members as it has been the practice.

“This action brought disagreement amongst them and hoodlums took advantage of the incident to break into houses and steal from them.

In a press statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Catherine Anene, CP Abass stated that a team of police officers were deployed to the scene immediately.

He said on sighting the police team, the suspects took to their heels while critical stakeholders in the area cooperated with the police in restoring peace in the area.

The police commissioner explained that the incident has nothing to do with tribe or ethnicity but criminals who intended to create tension and steal from members of the public.

According to him, normalcy has since been returned to the area with more patrol teams detailed there to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

He called on members of the public to desist from rumour mongering to avoid unnecessary tension and reactions.
