It’s official, May 29 is no longer Democracy Day.
This followed the signing into law the bill to make June 12 Democracy Day by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday.
By that act, May 29 also ceases to be a national public holiday.
Senior Special Assistant to the president on National Assembly matters (Senate), Ita Enang, who made this known to state house correspondents said: “By the act amended and signed by Mr. President, May 29 is no more a public holiday. June 12 is now a public holiday and the country’s Democracy Day.”

May 29, has been observed as Democracy Day since the return of democracy in 1999, being the day the military handed over power to an elected government.
However, on December 6, 2018, President Buhari announced June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of Moshood Abiola who was acclaimed to have won the 1993 presidential election.
