A 28-year-old man, Emmanuel Magaji, on Tuesday appeared before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun, charged with breaking into a student’s hostel and stealing properties worth N176,000.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 5, at King’s and Queen Hostel, Oduduwa Estate, Ede Road, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the accused allegedly broke into the room of one Fiyinfoluwa Badara, a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and stole valuables including a plasma TV, a speaker, laptop and a lamp.

He put the total estimated value of the items allegedly stolen at N176,000.

The prosecutor explained that the defendant broke into the room when the occupant had travelled home due to the closure of the school after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Osanyintuyi said that the alleged offences committed contravened Sections 383, 390(9),411 and 412 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The accused, however pleaded not guilty to the charges of intent to commit felony, entering and stealing.

Counsel to the accused, Mr. Philip Fasanmoye, urged the court to grant his client bail in most liberal terms.

He pledged that his client would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr.A.A. Ayeni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like amount.

Ayeni said that the surety must swear to affidavit of means, reside within the court jurisdiction, produce three recent passport photographs as well as provide evidence of payment of three years tax.

The case was adjourned until Sept. 8 for hearing.
