The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Sunday said there was no evidence of outbreak of an epidemic or major infection at the Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos.
The Commissioner, who went for an on-site inspection of facilities in the school on Sunday, said after the visit that he was satisfied with the general environment of the school, as well as the state of facilities available for use of students and teachers.
“I have been into the sick bay and the dormitories; I have interacted with all the girls and we haven’t really seen any evidence of major infection in the school. All the students look very happy and very healthy.
“I am very happy that whatever had happened in the last two or three weeks, we have seen that it has significantly subsided. The sick bay doesn’t have many students in it. We only had two or three cases this morning of cough or cold which is not unexpected,” Abayomi said.
The commissioner advised parents and guardians of some pupils at the school who had gone home to return their wards to school assuring them that there was nothing to worry about.
The resident physician of the College, Dr. Fatimah Ahmadu, said that students who came down with flu, cough and catarrh were treated appropriately while those with high fever were referred for further assessment.
She also said officials of the federal and state ministries of health, as well as environmental health officers from the local government area had visited the school, stressing that there is no need for fear or panic by the parents or the public.
Recall that reports had emerged last Monday, September 30, of an outbreak of an infectious disease which led to some parents and guardians taking their children and wards home.
Reports had it that over 700 students went home as a result of the disease scare.
Recall also that two years ago, three students of the college died from water-borne infections.
