A Lagos based private medical practitioner has reportedly died of coronavirus related complications.

The doctor identified as Emeka Chigbo died on Wednesday at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

He is on record as the first healthcare provider to die of the disease in Nigeria.

According to reports, doctor had treated a COVID-19 patient who died on April 3, at a private hospital.

He was allegedly rushed to LUTH on Monday.

The Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof. Chris Bode was quoted as saying the doctor was rushed to the facility after he showed symptoms of the disease.

“He was brought in late so there was no much we could do. He was a staff in LUTH years back before he went to join the private sector. We learnt he had COVID-19 patients in his facility that he was treating. He may have been exposed to the virus from there,” Bode said.
