One of Nigeria’s finest journalists, Luka Biniyat, was Thursday released from Kaduna Prison after spending 93 days for challenging Governor Nasir El-Rufai to stop the killings of his people by Fulani herdsmen.

Mr. Biniyat, a former Vanguard newspaper bureau chief in Kaduna, was arrested on the orders of Mr. El-Rufai and detained in prison custody under very stringent bail conditions.

His release followed series of pressure mounted on the government by journalists and activists and concerned persons across the globe.

A statement signed by the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, Adamu Yusuf, indicated that Mr. Biniyat was let out of the prison doors at 12:50 pm.

The union leader also confirmed Mr. Biniyat has gone home to be with his family after spending months in custody.

On hand to receive the detained journalist soon after he was freed by prison authorities was his brother, Thomas Biniyat, his counsel, James Kanyip, Kaduna State Council Chairman of the NUJ, Mr. Yufus.

Mr. Yusuf expressed gratitude to all who supported the ‘Free Luka Binniyat’s Campaign,” saying, “On behalf of NUJ Kaduna Council, I will like to appreciate all those that contributed in one way or the other to see that Luka Binniyat is out of prison.”
