Mrs Rebecca Sambo, Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, says 2021 International Women’s Day provided an opportunity to accelerate advocacy for women’s participation in leadership roles.
She was addressing news conference on Friday in Jos.
She said the theme of the celebration: “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 world’’, also provided the opportunity to involve women in decision-making and access to inclusive development.
She also implored women to ensure they get vaccinated against COVID-19 and to pray fervently for a quick end to the pandemic.
The International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911 in recognition of women who had made history and continued to champion change and encourage future generations.

The Plateau commissioner observed that the UN, organisers of the celebration, selected a new theme every year as a banner under which they could unify efforts to help raise awareness on gender equity.
She said that as a global event in a pandemic era, where live events were placed on hold, women would not allow the pandemic to dampen their spirits to connect communities especially those in conflict situations.
“There will be advocacy targeted at relevant stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the achievement of gender equality,’’ Sambo assured. (NAN)
