House of Reps reshuffles standing committees, adjourns plenary to Nov. 6

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, on Wednesday announced minor changes in the chairmanship of some standing committees.

According to him, the changes were due to the need to fill some of the existing vacancies in the house.

He announced the former Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC-Kano), who was suspended by the House over controversies surrounding his handling of the 2017 Budget, as Chairman, House Committee on Land Transport.

Emmanuel Oker-Jev (PDP-Benue), who chaired the Committee on Rules and Business, will now chair the Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while Edward Pwajok (APC-Plateau) will take over as Chairman of the Rules and Business Committee.

Other changes announced by the Speaker include: Haliru Jika (APC-Bauchi) being moved from Committee on Police Affairs to oversee the Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation and Lawal Abubakar (APC-Adamawa) taking over the Police Affairs Committee.

Dandutse Mutari was announced the Chairman, Committee on FCT Judiciary, while Sadiq Abubakar took over the Human Rights Committee.

Tajudeen Abbas (APC-Kaduna) was named as the new head for the House Committee on Solid Minerals while Yerima Ahmad (APC-Bauchi) took over as chairman of the Constituency Outreach Committee. Mahmood Mohammed (APC-Niger) took over the Committee on Housing while Aminu Sani was announced as chair of the House Committee on National Population.

Appointed as new deputy heads of standing committees were Ayo Joseph (Special Duties), Tope Olayenu (Army) and Ayo Omidiran (FCT Judiciary).

After the changes, the house moved for the adjournment of the plenary to Nov. 6. The motion was unanimously supported by the lawmakers.
