Nigeria’s Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, on Sunday lost out in the World Music Album category of the 2020 Grammys.

Angelique Kidjo won the category.

Burna Boy got his first-ever Grammys’ nomination with his fourth album ‘African Giant’.

Other albums nominated in the category included Gece by Altin Gün, What Heat by Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted By Jules Buckley, Celia by Angelique Kidjo which won the awards and Fanm D’Ayiti by Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet.

Sunday’s win at the 2020 Grammy Awards which was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles is Kidjo’s fourth win in the category and also her fourth Grammy win overall.

During her acceptance speech, she however graciously dedicated the award to Burna Boy saying: “this is for Burna Boy.

“Burna Boy is among those young artistes that come from Africa that is changing the way our continent is perceived and the way African music has been the bedrock of every music.”

The Best World Music Album category recognizes performers outside the United States who showcase non-European, indigenous influences in their body of work.

The first winner of the award was Mickey Hart in 1992.
