The former Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Mahmuda Shinkafi, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party.

He picked the party’s membership card at the party’s secretariat in Gusau, the state capital on Thursday.

Shinkafi was accompanied to the venue by party supporters and was received by the state’s Deputy Governor, Malam Ibrahim Wakkala, on behalf of Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari.

He spoke at the occasion promising to give all his best for the development of the party at all levels.

Said he:  “My coming to APC is home coming for me, because I left it before and now I am back home to my brothers and sisters. Together we are going to work for the party to become stronger and the party to beat in the state.”

Speaking on the return of the former governor to the APC, Wakkala, the deputy governor of the state said he was sure that Shinkafi’s return would enhance the political fortune of the party.

“It is not a matter of coming back but it is a return to the fold of Yarimawa. Together we are going to build the APC to become more vibrant and a viable political party in the state and country,” he said.

It would be recalled that Shinkafi succeeded Alhaji Ahmed Sani as governor of Zamfara State after his (Shinkafi) tenure as deputy governor expired.

Then, he belonged to the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP).

Shinkafi later defected to the People Democratic Party (PDP) in 2008, after being elected as the governor in 2007.

He vied for the governorship seat in 2011 and 2015 but lost to the incumbent, Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari of the APC.
