Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Friday promised to upgrade the facilities at the Oji River General Hospital in the state.
Ugwuanyi made the promise while inspecting the hospital facilities, which include the leprosy service settlement in the Oji River Local Government Area.
The governor expressed dismay at the state of the facilities at the hospital, which, according to him, had been neglected for decades.
He promised that his administration would, as a matter of urgency, carry out major upgrade and rehabilitation works at the health facility.
Ugwuanyi noted that the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had set the world thinking about the provision of adequate health facilities.
He said that the minimum his administration could do, in a short while, would be to rehabilitate the ealth facilities in the state.
Ugwuanyi restated the state government’s commitment to quality and affordable health care delivery in Enugu State.

He assured the people of Oji River Local Government Area that the rehabilitation of the facility would begin soonest.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Ifeanyi Agujiobi, said that the hospital was formerly known as the Leprosy Mission Hospital.
“This hospital was established in 1954 by the then Church Missionary Society (CMS), now Anglican Church,’’ he said.
Agujiobi stated that the management of a section of the hospital was taken over by the old Anambra Government in 1977.
“It was after the takeover that the hospital was designated as Oji River Sub-District Hospital.
“It is now, under the management of the Enugu State Government, called General Hospital, Oji River,’’ he said.
