Detained Journalist Jones Abiri Regains Freedom

Detained Nigerian journalist, Jones Abiri, has been freed from custody.

His release on Friday evening followed his ability to finally perfect his bail conditions.

Recall that the embattled journalist was detained on May 22 after his arraignment at a Federal High court in Abuja.

Although he was granted bail in June, he had been unable to meet the conditions till October 21, when the court varied the conditions.

The initial bail, which had a bond of N100 million had included a condition that Abiri should produced a surety within Abuja in like sum.

However, he told the court through his lawyer that he could not produce a surety in Abuja.

His lawyer, Samuel Ogala, told journalists that Abiri was released Friday after his surety, Godknows Igali, met the varied bail conditions.

Abiri, publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekly Source newspaper, was first arrested in 2016 and released two years following campaign by activists and the media for his release.

He is facing trial for alleged links to armed militancy in the Niger Delta.
