It was celebrations galore, jubilation and tears of joy on Friday, at Ini and Ukanafun local government councils in Akwa Ibom State, as the wife of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and former First Lady of the state, Mrs. Unoma Godswill Akpabio, commissioned and donated two bungalows built and furnished by the Godswill Akpabio Foundation (GAF), under its Shelter Intervention Programme, to some widows.

Akpabio, while commissioning the apartments amid excitement from both the recipients and their respective communities, charged the widows and their children to make good use of the houses, as well as guard them against predators.

Responding, the elated beneficiaries, Mrs. Happiness Emmanuel James, a 29-year old widow with four children from Ananamong village in Itu Mbonuso, Ini and Mrs. Mandu Effiong, a 40-year old widow also with four children from Nkek-Idak Ekpang village in Ukanafun, expressed their profound gratitude to God Almighty and Akpabio for providing them with permanent roofs over their heads, thus making the world that “laughed at them to now laugh with them”.

Besides gifting the widows with accommodation, Mrs. Akpabio also presented other gift items such as wrappers and cash to many women in the communities.

The overjoyed women prayed God to continue to bless and keep her and her family.

Mrs. Akpabio is no stranger to charity. As First Lady of Akwa Ibom, she established the Shelter-for-the-needy programme under the Family Life Enhancement Initiative (FLEI), through which she has continued to touch lives.

Present at the events were Obonganwan Ekaette Isong (APC Women Leader, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District), Mrs. Glory Afangide, Mrs. Nsikan Kennedy and Obonganwan Obon Odo, among others.
