Following the brutal murder of a catholic priest on Thursday, the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, has directed commissioners of police in the country to pay special attention to the clergy and increase security around worship centres nationwide.
Recall that Rev. Fr. David Tanko was burnt alive on Thursday by yet to be identified bandits in Taraba State.
The Force Public Relation Officer, DCP Frank Mba, who announced the directive in a statement in Abuja, said Fr. David was “gruesomely murdered in the most inhuman and barbaric manner at Kpankufu Village along Wukari Road in Taraba on his way to Kofai Amadu village. ”
He disclosed that the IG had also ordered the commissioner of police in-charge of Taraba Command to fish out those responsible for the killing.
The Force PRO said the IG further directed the deputy inspector-general of police in-charge of Force Criminal Investigation Department to provide additional forensic and other investigative assets to the Police Command in Taraba to aid investigations into the incident.
He said the IGP had expressed deep concern over the recent incidents of attacks on clergymen in some parts of the country.
Meanwhile, Mba said Adamu had commiserated with the Catholic family in Nigeria over the unfortunate incident and urged the people to be calm.
He solicited for public support for the police to fish out the perpetrators of the crime, their motives and circumstances surrounding the killing even as he assured the perpetrators would not go undetected and unpunished.
