The Presidency has denied claims that it approved a N30,000 palliative to every Nigerian who has a verified Bank Verification Number (BVN).
Early Saturday morning, fake news filtered into the air, alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved a stimulus package of N30,000 to Nigerians as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.
The statement, which went viral, was not signed, but attributed to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.
However, Adesina, while debunking the information in his Twitter handle, said, “Fake news peddlers have concocted a statement, purportedly issued by me, saying FG will pay N30,000 to each Nigerian with BVN, to help them stock up before an impending national lockdown. Not me, the so called statement is hereby disclaimed.”

In the misleading statement earlier released, on social media, the presidential spokesman was alleged to have said “the N30000 relief fund will be given to every Nigerian with verified BVN account. I am sure the fund will go a long way to help Nigerians stock up their home during the stay at home order by the Government.”
“We have tabled about 40 Millions Nigerians with valid BVN, the relief fund will be disbursed by the Ministry of Finance starting from today or latest tomorrow. Nigerian will start receiving credit alert to their bank account.
“The relief fund will only be given through BVN so it will be waste of time to start rushing to open many accounts.”
