Three people were killed early this morning when a directional bar built of concrete fell on a commuter bus they were traveling in.

Scores of others were critically injured and were being evacuated to the hospital as at the time of this report.

The accident occurred when the open-box bed of a big tipper truck on high speed flew up and hit a directional bar which fell on a fully loaded Coaster bus on its way to Oshodi.

According to eye witnesses, those who lost their lives died due to delay in the arrival of rescue team.

One of the eyewitnesses who spoke under anonymity told The Next Edition that delay in the arrival of the ambulance from Lagos State government, LASAMBUS, and lack of initiatives by the first responder contributed to the death of the three.

“Delay in the arrival of rescue team caused the death of the people. The ambulance did not come on time; before it came, those around were already bringing out the victims from the vehicle. And instead of taking them to the hospital, they gathered and started shouting,” he said.

An officer of the Mobile Police, who spoke under anonymity corroborated the claim.

He told The Next Edition correspondent: “I don’t really know what happened. I was in a bus going somewhere and when I saw the traffic situation, I knew something was wrong so I came down to find out.

“When I got to the scene, I saw several people lying critically wounded with fractures, heavy bleeding and I suspected internal injuries. None was dead then, so I suggested that we used a bus to evacuate them to the hospital but an Inspector of Police whom I met on ground said we should wait for the state ambulances to come.

“The first person that died was a young man and the delay contributed to his death.”

The eyewitness attributed the delay to the fact that there were no rescue points close to the scene of the accident.

The accident occurred at Ilasamaja Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

As at the time of filling this report, three of the accident victims had died.
