Students of the Moddibo Adama University of Technology (MAUTEC), Yola, Adamawa State, on Sunday unleashed terror on members of the university community over an alleged insult to Prophet Mohammed.
The action has led to the closure of the university and the deployment of soldiers and policemen to the campus, barely a day to the commencement of examinations.
The NEXT EDITION learnt trouble started during the week after an unnamed male student posted something on Facebook considered insulting to the Prophet.
This newspaper was unable to find out what the said student posted which could have drawn the ire of his Moslem colleagues.
But a source, who pleaded not to be named for safety reasons said a group of Moslem students gave the university’s leadership three days ultimatum to expel the student who posted the offensive material.

“The problem started at about 5 pm shortly after the prayer at the Mosque within the campus. The worshippers first destroyed the mosque before marching to the Christian worship centre where communion service was going on,” the source told this newspaper.
“They beat up the preacher, scattered the communion elements and injured students who tried to stop them from disrupting the service.
“As I speak, many students who were injured during the riot have been taken to various hospitals in town for treatment,” the source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Adamawa State command, Othman Abubakar confirmed there was a crisis between students over leadership of unions, adding that anti-riot policemen have been deployed to the university.
“Though there was no loss of lives, however, some places were destroyed by the students but normalcy has been restored now,’’ the police spokesperson said.
