President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the victorious Super Falcons of Nigeria for winning the 11th African Women Cup of Nations, AWCON 2018, Ghana, on Saturday
They beat the Banyana Banyana of South Africa 4-3 in the final match of the competition to retain the cup which they were defending,
The President, in a congratulatory message expressed delight at the discipline and commitment exhibited by the Falcons despite the stiff resistance put up by the South Africans.
In the message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Saturday evening, Buhari said winning the AWCON 2018 for the third consecutive time and ninth overall, by the girls was the “icing on the cake,” given that they had earlier qualified for the FIFA Women World Cup tournament in France next year.
He saluted the Falcons for doing their fatherland proud and showing clear dominance on the African continent.
The President urged them to approach the France 2019 competition with clear focus and determination to excel on the global stage.

He equally lauded the team’s coaching crew, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Supporters Club and all football-loving citizens for the adequate preparation and support given to the players and enjoined all stakeholders not to relent in rallying round the country’s football representatives going forward.
Reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to sports development as a unifying force, Buhari said: “I have never doubted the capacity of Nigerians to excel when given the right support.”
