Rev. Fr. Geoffrey Gopep, the Parish Priest of St. Finbers’ Catholic Church, Rayfield, Jos, has advised Christians to use the Lenten season to show kindness to others in the society.
Gopep gave the advice in his sermon at a mass to commemorate Ash Wednesday, in Jos.
Ash Wednesday is the commencement of Lenten season, a 40-day period of abstinence and sober reflection by Christians.
On Ash Wednesday, ashes are placed on foreheads of Christians, particularly those of Catholic extraction, signifying penance and repentance.
The 40-day fasting precedes Easter, during which Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Lenten season, commonly referred to as Lent, is characterised by prayer, fasting and alms giving.
The cleric also advised Christians to be upright, show love and give alms to the poor in the society.

“This is the period that we are expected to show kindness and love, and share what we have with our neighbours, devoid of ethnic and religious affiliations.
“We should do it sincerely, without expecting any reward. That way, God will bless us richly.
“We are encouraged to use the proceeds of fast to give alms, particularly to the less-privileged in our communities,” he said.
Gopep also advised Christians to desist from cheating and extorting others during the 40-day Lenten season and beyond.
He also called on them to use the period to pray fervently for the growth and development of the country, adding that only sincere prayers would heal the land from its current iniquities and challenges. (NAN)
