It’s no longer news that the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) has come and gone. But the memories still linger and may remain in people’s minds for a long time. No doubt, it was a show that every practitioner in the movie industry looked forward to just like other international shows like the Grammys, Oscars, among others.
The show was beautifully put together by Africa Magic in conjunction with Multichoice. Since the show ended, people have continued to talk about it and call out those who faltered during the show.
One of such people is IK Osakioduwa, a veteran host and compere who was this year’s AMVCA host. IK is not new to such shows and has handled a lot in the past years. While he did a stellar job at the event along with a South African beauty, Minnie Dlamini-Jones, he misspoke after Falz’s performance and that has put him in a little bit of spot.
During Falz’s performance, his back-up dancers ended it with a flirty pose around him. Speaking after the performance, IK commended the musician for a job well done, but added “In my next life I want to be a music artiste so I can have irresponsible girls dancing around me.”
Even though IK has apologised repeatedly, Twitter users still found his comment offensive and “irresponsible.”
His apology, which he made via Twitter reads:
“Hey Tweeps, I think I need to apologise for the joke about the dancers I want in my life. I was just saying I like ‘Bad’ girls (Who doesn’t ) Sorry to the people it offended. Please don’t get in your feelings about it. Let’s not kill ourselves over my adjectives.”
He continued by adding, “And just in case there is some parents out there misusing my words with their children. Let me be clear. I’m a huge supporter of the arts in ALL forms (INCLUDING DANCING). Being an artiste DOES NOT make anyone “irresponsible”. Please support your kids dreams/talents.”
Most felt the apology was lack luster and made the situation worse and people aren’t shy to say so. Here are Twitter reactions to his comments:
@edyyma “That you’d stand on Africa’s global stage & say you’d want to be a rapper so you could be surrounded by “irresponsible girls” is deplorable. You certainly don’t belong in the entertainment industry.”
@ahneeka1 “I see people in their feelings over IK Osakioduwa’s joke about the girls from Falz perfomance…. a hosting hazard… sometimes your intended word/message comes out differently..can’t tell how many times it has happened to me personally… plus it was a live show… no cuts.”
@datsbobby: “Egbon that I’m told I look like. This apology isn’t really spot on. 1) U said “irresponsible girls” u’re now translating it to say u meant bad girls, there’s no correlation.
2)Saying “who doesn’t” (trying to guilt trip people by implying that everyone should like your joke)
3)saying sorry to those it offended (means you still do not see the offence in calling those dancers irresponsible simply because they professionally danced.

All you should have said, is apologise for calling the girls irresponsible, and that you’re genuinely sorry for the term used.
4) You now ended it by saying don’t get in your feelings and let’s not kill over your adjectives.
If there was any modicum of apology in the lines above this statement, you threw it in the gutter.
You clearly are not apologetic, perhaps You don’t even see the wrong in the statement, pity!”
@Mrjemba: “This is why Ebuka will soon take all your jobs. At least, he has mastered the art of always being politically correct. An art which you are too proud to learn.”
@CheRox “I mean let’s even look at this “apology” from @ik_osakioduwa. A married man claiming to like “bad girls.” Now if @DStv even tries to say they’re a family friendly organisation, this apology shows that he’s adultery-friendly & doesn’t align with their brand. He will learn.”
I’m in the school of thought which thinks he meant to say one thing and it came out sounding very wrong, but also for someone at his level shouldn’t have had this kind of blunder. I understand the intention he wanted to convey but the choice of words was really poor.
