No fewer than 17 persons have been confirmed dead and 25 others injured following a gas explosion in the Abule-Ado area of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State on Sunday.

More than 50 buildings in the area were either completely destroyed or severely damaged by the explosion, just as hundreds of residents were rendered homeless.

Several vehicles parked in the area were also destroyed by the explosion.

Among those who lost their lives was the principal of Catholic school, Bethlehem Girls College, located area the explosion area.

Many pupils of the school were trapped in the wreckage of their hostel.

The Principal of the college, Rev. Sr. Henrietta Alokha, was said to have lost her life while attempting to rescue the pupils.

Also among the dead were four members of the same family, a couple and their two sons who were caught by the explosion on their way to church around about 9 a.m.

Acting Coordinator of NEMA in Lagos, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said the explosion which occurred around 9a.m on Sunday was eventually put out around 3.30p.m.
