The Benue State House of Assembly has frowned at the shoddy job done by the contractor, Brosette and Co Nigeria Ltd, who handled the renovation of the Benue State Library Board Headquarters in Markurdi.

The members were alarmed that the building which had already gulped the sum of N15.9 million still had its roof leaking.

The members were spoke while debating on the report of the House Standing Committee on Information and Orientation after its familiarization/working visits to Ministries, Departments and Agencies,(MDAs) under her legislative purview.

The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Tertsea Gbiseh, representing Kwande East Constituency, said his Committee during the visit discovered that the Library Board complex at the headquarters in Markurdi was in dilapidated condition with profuse leaking roofs, noticeable cracks, heavily infested with bats and rodents as co-occupants.

“At the time of the visit, the complex was flooded as a result of water from the leaking roof,” Mr. Gbiseh said.

The Committee reported that the contract for the renovation of the Library Complex was awarded to Brosette and Co Nigeria Limited, in October 2010 at the sum of N21, 998,750 and the sum of N15,928,209 was released to him leaving a balance of N6,070,540.90.

They, however, regretted that the renovation work left the building in a more terrible state of profuse leakages because the work was poorly done.

Debating further on the floor of the house, members resolved to invite the ministry and the contractor to explain why such shoddy job was carried out and certified by the supervising ministry.

The House therefore, recommended that the state government should release funds for the purchase of diesel, payment for subscription and other facilities such as new books, furniture, computers and ID cards and direct for the recruitment of 15 additional hands to facilitate smooth take off of the e-library and strengthen the financial muscles of the board so as to increase her revenue generation for a better service delivery.
