A 32-year old man, identified as Ogbu Igbere, has allegedly raped his 11-year old maid in Otukpo, Benue state.

A social activist on women and girl child molestation and the vulnerable, Julie Ooja Abah, who was handling the case told our correspodent that Igbere, a native of Itakpa in Obi Local Government area, was caught last Tuesday, raping his maid who is a relative of his wife.

Abah, the convener of Social Women Initiative, said the rapist, who owns Wiz Maternity and Clinic, Itakpa, was handed over to them during their protest in Otukpo on Wednesday after which they handed him over to the police.

Igbere has confessed to the crime, which he blamed on the influence of alcohol and depression.

In a recorded conversation which Abah sent to The Next Edition, Igbere said, “it was influence of alcohol and depression from other life experiences and challenges that I’m facing.

“I am married, I have children and my wife is still living with me. I’m 32 years and I feel ashamed. It is a very big shame. I need prayers from everyone. I don’t know what came over me up till this moment.”

Our correspodent gathered that the wife of the suspect had travelled out of town when incident happened.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident saying “the man is in custody here in Makurdi and the case is under investigation.”

“We are still investigating him because he does not want to admit he did it but there are evidences.

She debunked reports that the suspect is a medical doctor explaining that he only owns a local chemist/maternity.
