The Comptroller-General, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Ja’afaru Ahmed, on Wednesday disclosed that about 2,745 inmates, condemned to death, are awaiting execution the country.
Ahmed, made the disclosure during a media chat and facility tour to Dukpa farm centre, Gwagwalada, in Abuja.
He was represented by the NCoS spokesperson, Mr. Francis Enobore.
The Comptroller-General who pointed out that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) was intended to hasten the trial of suspects so that Correctional facilities could be decongested, lamented that the reluctance by some state governors to sign death penalty sentences of the condemned inmates was contributing to congestion in the Correctional facilities.

“Some State Governors are not willing to sign death sentences of condemned inmates, neither are they ready to commute their death sentence to life imprisonment,” he said.
He also disclosed that not more than 24 states had domesticated the ACJA, pointing out that the Act would help decongest the facilities as it empowers Correctional centres to reject inmates to forestall overcrowding of facilities.
Ahmed therefore urged state governors to do their part in helping the centres and freeing it of inmates awaiting execution, in order to decongest the facilities.
