As part of its prestigious 70th-anniversary celebration, the Anglican Girl Grammar School (AGGS) Ijebu-Ode on Saturday, honoured 20 distinguished alumni who have not only contributed to the progress of the school but have excelled in their respective fields.
Among the honorees were Mrs. Oluyemisi Edun, Managing Director of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Dr. Olabisi Deji-Folutile, Editor-in-Chief of Franktalknow.com and a Director at AF24NEWS, Yeye Folasade Sosanwo-Adedeji, an immediate past principal of AGSS, Mrs Anike Olusola Salami, the school’s first head prefect and first National President Old Girls Association, Prof Mrs Oluwatoyin.Aletor, a lecturer and supervisor of different branches of Chemistry at the Federal University of Technology, (FUTA) and Chief Mrs Osifeso Iyabo Funmilola, an educationist.
Other awardees are Mrs Mosunmola Mebude, a caterer and major contributor to developmental projects in her alma mater, Mrs Folakemi Ojetola, the president of AGGS UK, Mrs Esther Ajayi, a former staff of Union Bank, ‘Laide Osijo, an accomplished Insurance professional, Mrs Mojisola Olufemi Amore, a retired director at the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control (NAFDAC) and Ebunoluwa Olukoya, an administrative officer of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Also recognised for being good ambassadors are Omowunmi Kayode, a Quality Control Analyst at Tesco PLC UK, Pastor (Mrs) Taiwo Olabisi Durojaiye, an ordained pastor and former secretary of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives in Ijebu-Ode and Chief Mrs A.O Wilde, a former AGGS principal from 1977 to 1980. Mr Wale Dada, a former teacher in AGGS back in 1991 was also acknowledged for his diligence and contributions to the school.
The award ceremony is part of the seven-day programme commemorating AGGS’s 70th anniversary, which commenced from the 22nd to the 28th of January. The event was held at the school hall, where alumni, students, and guests gathered to celebrate the institution’s rich legacy and its enduring impact on society.
Old girls’ events are marked with heartfelt speeches, nostalgic reflections, and a sense of camaraderie among the attendees, and the AGGS 70th anniversary is no exception.
Speaking on her award, Mrs. Edun, a graduate of the class of ’79, expressed delight at the recognition. She also encouraged the present AGGS students to stay away from negative influences and focus on their education. “It’s a great honour and privilege to be an old girl of AGGS. And I celebrate with the school as they mark their 70th anniversary. AGGS has churned out so many women of timber and calibre who have made and are making positive impacts in our country. It is a school built on God’s words to impart good virtues, discipline, knowledge, and wisdom, in the girl child. And I pray that as the school continues to produce greater citizens for Nigeria by God’s grace.”
Also, Dr. Deji-Folutile expressed immense pride to be honoured by her alma mater. She described the award as a testament to the values she imbibed from AGGS.
Deji-Folutile, also charged the students to focus on their studies, as she declared a N25,000 cash award to the best SSS 3 student in English language. “I thank God for this honour, and I also appreciate Chief Mrs A. O Wilde who was the principal during our time in AGGS. She was not only a principal, she also mentored like a mother. I remember how her popular quote ‘One minute of enjoyment, everlasting sorrow’ became an admonishment that remained in our heads all through our growing up years.”
