WWC: Adekuoroye wins Africa’s first Silver

Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye became the first African to win a Silver medal in the women’s category at the World Wrestling Championship.

Adekuoroye lost 5-4 to Japan’s Haruna Okuno in the 55kg/121 lbs finals but it was enough for her to clinch Silver.
Adekuroye on Wednesday had earlier cruised to a 10-0 technical fall over Belarusian Iryna Kurachkina in the women’s 55kg to qualify for the final of the 2017 World Wrestling Championship in Paris, France.

The female wrestler is currently the number one in the United World Wrestling Women’s ranking.
She also has a World Wrestling Championship bronze.

Odunayo Adekuroye who won gold for Nigeria at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in India and bronze at the 2015 World Wrestling Championship in Las Vegas is now the first African female wrestler to win Silver at the championship.
Blessing Oborodudu also of Nigeria is expected to fight Jackeline Castillo of Colombia in a Bronze medal match later today in Paris.

Earlier today as well, Nigeria’s Aminat Adeniyi was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the championship in the women’s 58kg.

She lost 4-3 to AisuluuTynbekora of Kazakhstan.

Other Nigerians at the championship include Mercy Genesis (48kg, women), Amos Daniel (65 kg, men) and John Emmanuel (70kg, men).
