The Presidency has declared that the security challenges as characterized by the herdsmen-farmers clashes can only be solved if the people of the country remain united.
The Presidency made this declaration on Saturday, stressing that it made no distinction amongst the people of the country.
It also assured that it had been working tirelessly to ensure the safety of lives and property in the country.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the Presidency appealed to all Nigerians as well as members of the international community to refrain from spreading false stories and inflammatory statements concerning the recent herdsmen-farmers clashes.
The Presidency said it had been working closely with state governments and the security services – as well as international partners – in order to resolve the ongoing issue.
Describing the clashes between herders and farmers as historical, it said the causes were varied and complex.
Climate change, specifically the drying up of the Chad Basin, it argued, had led to more pressure on the population in the North of Nigeria, which further compounded the problem.

It added that there was evidence of involvement of some politicians using criminals to perpetuate the killings.
“Climate change is an issue of global significance and the Nigerian Government is determined to continue working closely with its neighbours in order to ensure that a long-term solution can be implemented,” the Presidency said.
