US President Donald Trump has vowed to appeal a federal judge’s decision to temporarily block his executive order ending birthright citizenship in the United States.
The Next Edition understands that the ruling, issued on Thursday by US District Judge John C. Coughenour in Seattle, imposed a 14-day halt on enforcing the order, which has sparked widespread debate and legal challenges.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to pursuing the appeal.
“Obviously, we will appeal it,” the president said.
The executive order, signed shortly after Trump’s inauguration, has faced legal challenges from at least 22 states, two cities, and various civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Critics argue that the order contradicts the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.
In his ruling, Judge Coughenour did not mince words, describing the executive order as unconstitutional.
He said, “This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.
“I’ve been on the bench for over four decades, and I can’t remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one is.”
Coughenour’s decision comes as legal experts and advocacy groups question the legality of attempting to alter birthright citizenship through executive action rather than a constitutional amendment.
Despite the ruling, the Department of Justice expressed confidence in the legality of the president’s executive order.
A DOJ spokesperson said, “We look forward to presenting a full merits argument to the Court and to the American people, who are desperate to see our Nation’s laws enforced. The executive order correctly interprets the US Constitution.”
