Police in Sri Lanka have stepped up their crackdown on drug traffickers following a directive issued by President Maithripala Sirisena.

The president had vowed to re-implement the death sentence on those found guilty of drug trafficking.

Though, court had sentenced persons to death for crimes on murder and narcotics offences, the government has not implemented the sentence since 1976.

Police say it has detected a total of 520 Kilogrammes of heroin and arrested 6,657 people.
