The third edition of Soundcity MVP awards took place on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Eko Convention Centre of Eko Hotels in Lagos, with Nigerian musician, Damini Ogulu aka as Burna Boy clinching the highest number of awards including the highly coveted “African Artist of the Year” while Davido and Wizkid got one award each.
The show was co-hosted by Media Personalities, Moet Abebe and VJ Adams. International recording artistes such as Jidenna, South African rapper AKA, Tanzanian duo Navy Kenzo, Gqom queen Busiswa made the performers’ line up alongside top Nigerian artistes such as Burna Boy, Niniola, Patoranking, Runtown, Teni, Illbliss, Victor AD, Skibii and Phyno.
The award which was tagged #SoundcityMVP was watched all over the continent and beyond with the organisers streaming live on Soundcity TV channel and their official YouTube account.
The award night started at about 9:00pm Nigerian time. Soundcity this year recognised some non-musicians for their Innovation and Excellence. This included the likes of Super Eagles’ Ahmed Musa and ace Video director, Clarence Peters.
The award night also saw first timers taking home some important awards. Patoranking for the first time win took “Video of the Year” award for his song, “Heal The world.” South Africa’s Busiswa clinched the Best Female MVP against Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage, Simi, Niniola and Yemi Alade.
Another notable star of the night was Burna Boy’s mother who kept coming up to receive the awards on behalf of her son who was absent. The excited mother used the opportunity to thank Nigerians for supporting her son.
