A Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ikeja has fixed July 31, this year for hearing in the case involving a 52-year-old woman, Bunmi Akinyemi, who allegedly beat her brother’s wife, Ireti Obembe to a pulp.
Akinyemi, residing in Ayobo area, is standing trial on a one-count charge of assault.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, the accused committed the offence on June 21 at Power Line, Ajasa Command, Lagos.
Akeem told the court that the accused assaulted the complainant by beating her to a pulp.
The fight, the prosecutor said, started after an argument between Obembe and the accused.
“The complainant said that she was dragged out of her shop by her sister-in-law who started beating her. “
She said that the accused claimed she was being assaulted for dragging her brother to court, instead of settling their dispute amicably.
“Obembe who was very angry about what her sister-in-law had done, reported the matter to the police and the accused was later arrested, “Akeem further told the court.
The offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Section 173 prescribes three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reported that Magistrate T.O Shomade granted the accused bail in the sum N10,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till July 31, for mention.
