The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has adopted President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as its consensus candidate for the February 16 presidential election.
The party announced its decision on Thursday after its national executive council meeting in Abuja.
SDP NEC, however, explained that it has not merged with the APC.
Former governor of Cross River, Donald Duke, had been the flagbearer of the party.
Duke was declared the presidential candidate of the party in January following a ruling by the court of appeal in Abuja which set aside the judgment of an Abuja high court declaring Jerry Gana, former information minister, as the party’s presidential flagbearer.

Donald Duke left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018 to pursue his presidential ambitions on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
However, announcing the party’s adoption president Buahri, the SDP leadership said the series of court cases had left them with little time to campaign.
The party becomes the second to adopt Buhari as its consensus candidate.
The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, had in January, endorsed Buhari’s re-election after its presidential candidate , Oby Ezekwesili pulled out of the race.
