23-year-old Auwalu Muhammed has emerged winner of the computer-based scholarship test organised by the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola, Adamawa State.

For coming tops in the selection test organised in 25 centers across the country on August 5, Mr. Muhammed, who took the test in Bauchi State, has been awarded AUN’s full scholarship.

The offer includes tuition, feeding, accommodation and technology services for the 2017/18 session.

While he graduated from Inuwa Dahiru Memorial Secondary School in Bauchi, Mr. Muhammed has been enrolled in the Natural and Environmental Sciences program of the university.

Authorities of the university said 37 other winners, one each from the 36 states of the Federation and Abuja, will receive a full-tuition scholarship for the Fall 2017 semester.

Another 37 candidates, one from each of the states and Abuja, have been offered a 50-percent tuition scholarship for the Fall semester, which opens for classes on August 22.

AUN’s President, Dawn Dekle, congratulated all the scholarship winners and welcomed them and their parents to the University community.

“We are delighted to welcome our latest class of students into our learning community, and they are already creating a buzz on campus with our returning students,” she said.

“All of our students are future leaders and entrepreneurs, set to transform the economy and create jobs. AUN is here to support them and teach them the skills to become lifelong learners.
“Our students are not just consumers of knowledge on our campus, they are active producers of knowledge, whether it is a member of a research team led by one of our world-class faculty members or serving on a start-up team for a new business through our incubator center – we all roll up our sleeves and participate alongside each other.”

Assistant Vice President, Recruitment, and Marketing, Julius Ayuk-Tabe, described the offer as “generous.”
He said the scholarship, which targets students from across Nigeria, is a part of the tradition of attracting the brightest students across the country, Africa, and the world to the university.
“Each year, our university sets aside a large fund for scholarships and other forms of financial aid for undergraduate students. The merit scholarships were increased from 67 last year to 75,” he said.

The highly competitive selection test for the scholarships which covered the nation’s geopolitical zones drew over 300 students to the 25 examination centers. The official list of winners is now available on www.aun.edu.ng

Since it was founded in 2003 by former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, the AUN has brought together the brightest candidates from Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Niger, Chad, Sierra Leone, and other African countries, to study under one roof.

The university has given over 1000 merit scholarships since inception and seeks to make its rigorous American-style liberal education possible for all qualified applicants, regardless of family income.

It will on Monday, matriculate the class of 2021 in a swearing-in-ceremony, which is known in the tradition of American higher education as convocation.
