The statement reads:  “Alhaji Maitama Sule was a leading statesman whose demise would be missed by all and sundry. He was a gifted Nigerian whose knowledge of the Kano emirate earned him the traditional title of Dan Masanin Kano.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, we mourn the exit of a legend and elder statesman, Alhaji Dr Yusuf Maitama Sule who died at 88 at an Egyptian hospital in Cairo.

“He will be sorely missed as the first Umbudsman and former Nigerian Permanent Representative at the United Nations.
